Ruckus The Music Server Has Closed Its Doors

Ruckus is an online music serving geared towards universities that allow students to brook an unlimited amount of music, has just closed its doors.

The service was an appeal to the college students which offered a legal alternative to the piracy that can be found on many campuses. Ruckus has moved to an ad-supported model and has partnerships with dozens of major universities. The site went down today with a note saying that it was undergoing an update.

Ruckus had acquired by Total Music last year. The joint venture between Sony and UMG had an intention of using it as a backend service which is not yet been launched. Total Music made a strong pitch to provide Facebook’s music service but was struggling. This was eventually denied when the social network was unwilling to share revenue and user data which might be the deal.
